I've made a lot of mistakes as a content marketer and creator, but learned valuable lessons in the process. Here's a few of the big ones for you and your teams to think about:
Mistake #1: Not Engaging Back With the Community
I've previously focused too much on creating what I wanted to create, would push it out and move on. I wasn’t very good at responding to comments or DMs or taking constructive criticism. While I think it’s important to have some boundaries, engaging with people that are engaging with you makes or breaks you. And, I think it’s only going to be even more important in the future. I have a lot of respect for community managers out there engaging 24/7. It's critical for building community.
Mistake #2: Trying to Cater to Everyone
The best way to articulate this point is by using the fitness industry as an example, considering how long I’ve been involved in it. I’m a generalist, not a specialist. I've worked with many different specialists, but I don’t possess their depth of knowledge in their specific areas. While I can help anyone become fitter and healthier, if someone wants to win a marathon, they should be talking to a running coach. I believe the takeaway here is that getting very clear on who you’re serving and producing for is key. Niche down.
Mistake #3: Letting Fear Hold Me Back
I’ve been destroyed in comment sections more times than I can count. I’d be lying if I said this didn't bother me, and any creator would be lying too if they say it doesn’t affect them. And that’s only one example. There’s a lot of scary things about creating content and putting yourself out there. I’ve written too many pieces and edited too many videos that have gone unpublished. Fear will get anyone stuck. Don't let it.
